Spelling Program
The Grade 4/5 students in Room 213 will be given a weekly spelling list. Students will also be asked to add words of their own that they came across in their reading or throughout the week. The spelling list will be given out on Monday (usually Day 1), and the students' Spelling Story will be due each week on Friday (usually Day 5). There will not be a spelling quiz or oral dictation. Instead, students will independently study the weekly spelling list and write the words in sentences and a story. Students will practice both the spelling and meaning of the words, along with practicing the writing process (drafting, revising, proof-reading). At the end of the week, students will read their stories aloud to their peers and have an opportunity to share with the class. Below are the requirements for the Spelling Stories notebook.
Spelling Stories Notebook 1. Print the date in full (e.g. Monday, September 13, 2010) 2. Write the date in full in cursive 3. Write the spelling list words in alphabetical order, skipping every other line (8 words) 4. Add your own words (2 words) 5. Write each spelling list word in cursive 6. Copy the spelling list words in your agenda (cursive or print) 7. Write sentences or begin writing a story using all of your spelling list words 8. Underline the spelling word in each sentence
